College Papers

Most research and college assignments ask the student to engage in one of two approaches:

. Explore and evaluate (present an analysis)
. Persuade (present an argument)

Analytical Papers

In a paper that explores and evaluates, the student:

. may present a specific analysis of a literary text

. may examine how a historical figure came to his or her beliefs

. may analyze how changes in a particular animal’s habitat have affected its breeding patterns

The student’s purpose is not to rebut another critic’s reading of that text, challenge another writer’s analysis of that historical figure’s growth, or disprove another experimenter’s theorem. Instead, the student focus is on researching and presenting his or her own analysis of a set of materials or experiments.

Argumentation Papers

An argumentative paper takes a position on a debatable question. The student reviews the various arguments surrounding that question and presents material arguing for a particular answer. A good argument paper not only fairly and clearly presents the views of those with whom the student disagrees, but also points out where and how the student believes those arguments are flawed. In this paper, the student needs to show why his or her argument presents a stronger response to the question than the responses of others who might disagree with his or her position.

The objective of descriptive essay is to communicate a deeper meaning through the description. Students are expected to know what you are talking about and tell it to the reader using colorful words and sensory details.

When students are asked to write an expository essay, the examiner needs them to explain a topic using real facts, statistics and examples. 5. Argumentative Essay

This type of essay usually present two sides of a controversial issue in one paper; students are expected to present a valid argument towards each side without bias and also come up with pros and cons of each argument. Their analysis of the topic must be un-emotive and factual and include both sides of the argument.

Analytical essay involves getting a range of information from different sources and analyzing the different viewpoints from a factual rather than opinionated standpoint. Analytical essay writer is expected to focus on the methodology, findings, or conclusions of previous researchers and conclude his own research with a summation of the findings and then make a recommendation of framework to use for further study on the issue.
