Turning out responsible kids

Proverbs 22:6 Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.

How do you turn out Responsible kids?

I. Give them Responsibility

Genesis 1:28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.

Two Questions:

1. Why don’t we give responsibility to our kids?

2. Why do kids resist it?

II. Let them experience the consequences of their choices.

Three types of consequences:

1. Natural

Proverbs 16:26 The laborers appetite works for him; his hunger drives him on.

2. Logical

2 Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “If a man will not work, he shall not eat.”

The three “R’s”

1. Related to behavior

2. Reasonable to Parent and child

3. Respectful  to parent and child

3. Agreed to

Genesis 2:16-17 And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”

III. Love them
unconditionally

Hebrews 12:5-6 And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.”
