Why study cells?

-Cells are common across all life forms, so are the basis for understanding organisms of all types
-Cells may have their own unique features and functions – skin cells, cells in plant leaves,
-Cells with different functions generally have different shapes and sizes, both of which enhance their specific functions

Two types of cells

Prokaryotic cells
-Cells that do not contain an nucleus
   -Single cell organisms
Eukaryotic cells
-Cells that contain a nucleus which encloses the genetic material
   -Generally larger than prokaryotic cells
   -Found mainly in multicellular organisms
-Contain carious organelles determined by specific cell structure and function
