Effective Human Relations

Human relations is about how to get along more effectively and instinctively 

Its about being friendly, and approachable

Its about being sensitive to other peoples concerns and needs

Human Relations Principles

Three principles of effective Human Relations

1. Become a friendlier person
2. Become more approachable
3. Become a leader! 

1. Become a Friendlier Person

Don’t criticize or condemn or complain

Give honest, sincere appreciation

Create a desire in the other person to relate

Be genuinely interested in other people

Become More Approachable

Project a welcoming friendly posture

Don’t look busy or preoccupied

Avoid confrontations and arguments

Be respectful of the other person’s state of mind and opinions

Find diplomatic ways to deal with differing opinions

3. Become a Leader

Emulate qualities of effective leaders

Leaders instinctively focus on others

Leaders create a positive environment

Leaders are naturally open, honest, and friendly

Leaders are accommodating 

 Leaders work well with other people

These four requirements are the prerequisites for developing effective Human Relations expertise


1. Good Communication
     - Learn to communicate more effectively
  - Speak clearly and concisely
- Listen and wait for a response
- Let other express their point of view openly
- Make them feel comfortable

2. Empathy
     - Understand the feelings of the other person
     - Put yourself in their shoes
     - Show a sincere and genuine interest in the other person
     - Be compassionate and understanding
     - Have a helpful, caring disposition

3. Manage Stress
     - A body is a “pressure vessel”: when steam builds up…
          - Explode and take out people around you
  - Jeopardize relationships
  - Put people on edge

          - Implode and damage yourself
  - High blood pressure
  - Nervousness, tension

       - Learn to relieve pressure before it builds up 
       - Avoid or prepare for potentially stressful things

4. Resolve Conflicts
- Avoid conflict if possible
- Avoid confrontations
- Avoid a combative, confrontational tone
- Be diplomatic about disagreements
- Learn to apologize
- Selectively choose your battles… lose a battle to win a war
- Compromise over minor problems; assert yourself on   matters of principle

Five things you can do now to improve your Human Relations capabilities

1. People have names… use them!
2. Everyone wants to be heard… listen!

3. Make everyone feel good
4. Don’t act when upset or angry

People Have Names… Use Them!
- Use a person’s name whenever you can
- Repeat a person’s name when you meet them, then again in the     first minute of conversation
- Start conversations with the person’s name

2. Everyone want to be heard… Listen!
     - Become a listener and not a talker

     - Why don’t we listen better?
- We are preoccupied
- We’re better at talking than listening
     - When was the last time you listened to someone intently     without thinking about a response?

     - Thank someone for an accomplishment
     - Refer someone because of their skills
     - Give credit for good ideas or actions
     - Give a compliment
     - Make people smile by smiling

    - Learn to walk away or remain quiet when you or the other person is angry
    - Don’t engage people when they are preoccupied
    - Be sensitive to feelings and emotions
    - Never criticize someone in front of others!

     - Thank people regularly and routinely
     - Especially those who you tend to take for granted
     - Challenge yourself to find creative and memorable ways to say “Thank you!”
