Defeating Demons
(Part 2)
Colossians 2:15

He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

Why was Jesus born? To destroy the devil.

The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. (1 John 4:8)

Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. (Hebrews 2:14-15)

Born to defeat a deadly dragon (Revelation 12:1-5)

How did Jesus turn these weapons against the demons?

How can we defeat demons?

Disarming demons

When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe; but when one stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoil. (Luke 11:21-22)

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. (John 10:10) Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out.  (John 12:31)

Defeating demons

  1. What are some demon weapons?
  2. How did Jesus turn these weapons against the demons?
  3. How can we defeat demons?

How can we defeat demons?
a. Side with Jesus.
b. Live in his victory.

Side with Jesus, not the devil.

You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. (John 8:44)

Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. (1 John 3:8-10)

They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. (John 17:14-15)

We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him. We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. (1 John 5:18-19)

If you side with Jesus and know He has defeated demons, then don’t let yourself be taken captive by your defeated foes. They will try to trick you, but the only way they can mess you up is if you believe them. Don’t believe discredited lies. Don’t run after defeated elemental spirits who are fleeing in defeat, and don’t to go along with them. Christ stripped the powers and led captivity captive. Don’t let yourself fall back into the hands of defeated invaders and slave traders.

Live in His victory

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son. (1:13-14)

He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. (2:15)

• Let no one delude you. (2:4)

• Let no one take you captive. (2:8)

• Let no one pass judgment on you. (2:16)

• Let no one disqualify you. (2:18)

Live in Jesus’ holiness and happiness.

Each day afresh, claim your position in Christ and His triumph over evil powers.

He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
