Why Study Is So Important?

Henry Reyenga

The Danger of Study

It is all about Jesus.

John 5:38-40  nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. 39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

New Testament Directive

Take your training seriously.

2 Timothy 1:13    What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 2:15  Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

Qualified Teachers Are Important

The principle of professors who teach students is established in Scripture.

2 Timothy 2:2  And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.

Brings Competence

Ministry training is to be passed on.

Romans 15:14    I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, complete in knowledge and competent to instruct one another.

Brings More Confidence

Confidence comes with discernment and practice.

1 Timothy 4:7-8  Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.  8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

Ministry Intelligence

Gifts must be informed with knowledge.

1 Corinthians 14:19  But in the church, I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.

Study Takes You Out Of Your Own Frame Of Reference

Different situations need different approaches.

2 Timothy 2:25  Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth,

The Stakes Are Too High To Wing It

A sacred trust from God.

1 Thessalonians 2:4  On the contrary, we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts.

Become Spirit-Filled

God works with you and changes you through training.

2 Corinthians 3:5-6  Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.  6 He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

Stay On The Narrow Way

Ministry training gives you a deeper understanding.

Hebrews 2:1    We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.

Gain Credibility

“The proof is in the pudding.”

1 Thessalonians 2:13   And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.

Be More Effective

Tie into the legacy and keep the fire going.

2 Timothy 1:5   I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.  6 For this reason, I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.  7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

You Benefit By Learning!

Live it as you learn it!

Philippians 4:9  Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

Bearing Fruit Everywhere

Only the truth of the gospel bears fruit.

Colossians 1:4-6  because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints—  5 the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel 6 that has come to you. All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God’s grace in all its truth.

Gets You Ready For Ordination

This is a training process that includes in-depth training and local and global ordaining.

2 Corinthians 10:18   For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.
