How Great Are You?

David Feddes

If you are born again, your greatness is God-like

  • He has granted to us His precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature. (2 Peter 1:4)

  • God chose to make known how great… are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. (Colossians 1:27)

Beholding and becoming

  • And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:18)

  • The more you revere God’s glory, the more you reflect God’s glory.

Underestimated by others

  • Joseph: his brothers despised him, but God gave him dreams of greatness.

  • Moses: his countrymen snubbed him, but God sent him to free a nation.

  • David: his brothers cut him down, but God anointed him king.

  • Jesus: his brothers and neighbors did not believe in Him, but He was God.

Underestimating yourself

  • Moses said he could not speak well. But in reality, “Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.” (Acts 7:22)

  • Gideon argued that he was not the mighty warrior God declared him to be.

  • Jeremiah said he was only a kid after God called him a prophet to the nations.

  • To underestimate your God-given greatness is not great humility, it’s small faith.

Healthy humility

  1. Left to yourself, you’d be a ruin.

  2. God accepts you based on Jesus’ life and death, not your growing goodness.

  3. Your greatness grows from Jesus.

  4. Your God-given greatness is puny compared to the Giver’s greatness.

  5. You still have a long way to go.

  6. Other God-fearing people may be as great or greater than you.

How great are you?

  • You are the light of the world (Matt 5:14)

  • The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good. (Luke 6:45)

  • Noble and good heart (Luke 8:15)

  • God’s children and heirs (Romans 8:17)

  • You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession (1 Peter 2:9)

  • Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? (1 Corinthians 3:16)

  • I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. (1 John 2:14)

  • Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? Do you not know that we are to judge angels? (1 Cor 6:2-3)

What is your name?

  • Abram is renamed Abraham

  • Jacob is renamed Israel

  • Simon is renamed Peter

  • James and John are called Sons of Thunder

  • Saul is renamed Paul. “By the grace of God, I am what I am.”

  • You are what God calls you.

You are what God calls you.

  • If God gives you a name, that is who you become.

  • If God gives you a mission, that is what you accomplish.
