Have you ever unintentionally created barriers in your communication, preventing people from expressing themselves freely or understanding you clearly? The idea of "stumbling blocks" dates back to Biblical times, where narrow mountain paths would be deliberately obstructed. Today, we'll discuss how we can avoid these stumbling blocks in our communication.

The Bible teaches us in Romans 14:13, "Therefore, let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way." While the verse talks about faith, its core principle applies universally: don't hinder communication with others.

Meaning Barriers

One of the first barriers in communication is what Reuel Howe calls "meaning barriers." These barriers prevent the true essence of a message from being understood. Communication is not as simple as it seems, a lesson we can trace back to the Tower of Babel.

Communication Spoilers

Experts like Carl Rogers, Reuel Howe, and others have identified responses that tend to block communication. For example:

  1. Criticizing: Negative reactions, such as unwarranted criticism, can severely hamper meaningful conversations. Proverbs 17:28 warns us about this.

  2. Name-Calling: Stereotyping or labeling people can also act as a stumbling block, as exemplified by Proverbs 10:21.

  3. Diagnosing: Jumping to conclusions about why someone behaves in a certain way can be detrimental. Proverbs 18:15 urges us to seek knowledge instead.

  4. Evaluative Praise: While encouragement is important, manipulative praise can be a significant barrier. Psalm 12:2 warns against deceptive flattery.

  5. Commanding without Relationship: Instructions should come from a place of understanding and relationship, as suggested in Ephesians 6:21-22.

  6. Threatening: Using threats to control behavior is another stumbling block, cautioned against in Proverbs 15:1.

Reflection and Prayer

So, what stumbling blocks do you struggle with? Perhaps seek advice from a trusted friend or family member to help you recognize your own communication barriers. These barriers not only hurt your relationships but also your effectiveness as a Christian leader.

Let us pray. Lord, as we reflect on our communication obstacles, we ask for Your guidance to remove these stumbling blocks. May Your Holy Spirit enlighten us and empower us to communicate more effectively. In Jesus' name, Amen.
